Are you a fan of horror games? Do you like being scared out of your mind while adrenaline rushes through your veins? Well, if you are, then this game is perfect for you! We’ll look into it further in this FNAF games & spin-offs guide.

First released in 2014, Five Nights at Freddy’s is an online horror game that took the world by storm. The franchise consists of 9 video games with the same goal: survive! But it’s easier said than done. So before discussing FNAF games and spin-offs, we’ll talk about the game’s history to grasp what you will play!

The primary goal in the video game is to survive. You are in a pizza shop owned by Freddy Fazzbear, known as Freddy Fazzbears’ Pizza. One specific detail in this game is the animatronics, which are the scary parts that you need to “outsmart” to win the game.

These animatronics characters are constantly wandering through the shop, and your goal is to keep an eye on them constantly. Avoid getting noticed because that’s when they will murder you, and the game will be over!

The Guard is the protagonist in Five Nights at Freddy’s, his name is Mike Schmidt, and you are the one in his shoes! It seems easy when it’s written like this, but there are some things that you need to know before you claim this game is effortless. The game needs to be beaten by using tactics. These tactics include saving electricity to keep yourself safe from animatronics.

Each time you use a tool (for example, open a door), the electricity percentage available goes down. Eventually, wasting all your electricity will power down your facilities, leaving you defenseless. Therefore, you need to keep an eye on proper resource management through the night.

Different editions of the game have different tools. For example, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 does not have security doors. Instead, the player uses an animatronic head and a flashlight to avoid death. The 3rd edition of the game uses tools such as a camera, ventilation system, and audio, all connected to a monitoring panel. You need to keep an eye on all the maintenance systems because if you don’t, the animatronics (via hallucinations) can make the systems malfunction.

Today, we’ll analyze all the Friday Nights at Freddy’s games within the franchise and go over a few spin-offs. After reading this guide, you’ll be more informed about the lore and how brilliant the games are, enjoy!

Bottom Line Up Front

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a video game that belongs to the horror genre. The game revolves around a protagonist, which is usually a guard. There is a total of 9 games, with 4 spinoffs. Your goal is to survive the 5 nights by using different tactics to outsmart the antagonists. The game consists of multiple animatronics that will try to kill you throughout the night.

Moreover, using the defensive systems will wear down electricity, resulting in the animatronics bypassing your security. Find out how to manage your character and beat the game in the article below.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 1

The game’s first edition was released in 2014 on the 8th of August. There was also a mobile version of the game at the time. Unfortunately, the mobile version ended very soon due to the inability to make the graphics more realistic. In 2019, the game saw the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 ports released along with the second, third, and fourth parts of the game.

The games’ protagonist is Mike Schmidt, who begins his night shift at the place known as Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. His main goal is to survive from the animatronics (Phantoms) roaming through the night, waiting for a gap in the security. To fend off the robots, you will need to use various tactics and tools at your disposal.

You cannot leave your room (the Office) in the game’s first edition. The goal is to stop the animatronics from entering the Office using the lights, camera systems, and two doors. There is a certain amount of electricity the player could use per night. Therefore, you will have to be careful and strategic with your resources.

The gaming community claimed the first and sixth editions of the game as the scariest due to their unexpected jumpscares. Also, Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 has the “less-is-more approach”, satisfying fans with this horror story’s simplicity.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

The second edition of the game was released on the 10th of November, 2014. The gameplay has vast similarities with the first edition. For example, the night shift remains from 12 AM to 6 AM. The protagonist (the Guard) and the fictional place are also the same – Fazzbears’ Pizza.

However, the game has some new editions, like Withered Freddy, the main antagonist. He is even scarier in this game with distinct and disturbing features. Also, the protagonists are different, with Jeremy Fitzgerald replacing Mike Schmidt.

After you manage to survive the five nights, the night guard will be promoted to a daylight shift job at the same place. The Guard will also receive a fictional paycheck in the game if it manages to survive for the whole five nights.

The new changes and the additional mechanics were critiqued as positive outcomes in this game. The new installment in the franchise brought a semi-fresh beginning to the game that was not even a year old.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3

The third sequel of the game is where FNAF started to shape into a story, positively welcomed by the fans. 30 years after the first edition’s release, the game takes place in a fictional location known as Fazbear’s Fright, a horror attraction originating from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

There is only one animatronic in this game that can kill – Springtrap. However, there will be encounters with multiple Phantoms during the game, such as Phantom Freddy, Chica, Foxy, Balloon Boy, Puppet, and Mangle. The difference is that they cannot kill the player, and their only goal is to jumpscare you to de-activate some of the maintenance systems.

The third edition of the game has two endings, good and bad. The bad ending reveals that the souls of the murdered children are still haunting the animatronics. In contrast, the good end (which can be reached by finishing all the minigames available) reveals a cake brought by the animatronics.

Friday Nights at Freddy’s 3 received ratings as the best tension/control balanced game available in the industry. Also, making Springtrap the only killer and Phantoms as the “helpers” was rated as a “progressive move” for the game.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4

Friday Nights at Freddy’s 4 was released on the 31st of October 2015. PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch ports got their release on the 29th of November 2019.

The environment in FNAF 4 is different from the previously mentioned games. In this sequel, the character has no name and suffers from delusions that he is attacked by evil animatronics. The primary goal is to survive and defend yourself by using doors and a flashlight.

You will learn more information about the main character and why these hallucinations occur during the game. Moreover, the story is expanded upon through the narrative of the minigames. You’ll soon find out that he got bullied as a young boy for his fear of a yellow animatronic bear and rabbit.

The rabbit is called Spring Bonnie, while the bear’s name is Fredbear. The dynamic of these animatronics is interesting as Spring Bonnie talks when he is alone, but Fredbear aims to murder the child.

The horror gaming community has praised five Nights at Freddy’s 4 because of the tense atmosphere the game creates. Finally, the game is more challenging than previously released titles since you need to use more tactics to survive the nights. So you may die many times before figuring out how to complete the game.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location

Sister Location takes place in a fictional location known as Circus Baby’s Rentals and Entertainment, a sister company of Fazbear Entertainment. The protagonist here is Michael Afton, who has the nickname “Eggs Benedict”. Mike is following the lead of HandUnit, an A.I. character with the same role as the Phone Guy in the previous games.

Furthermore, this sequel offers a custom night where you can set up the parameters yourself and play on any difficulty. The main character can use mechanics found in the first game, and new minigames are also available. They describe their fate of Mike after the events of the main game took place. Moreover, you’ll be shown a cut scene where Mike speaks to his father.

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Simulator

The game was released on the 4th of December 2017. Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Simulator revolves around the same protagonist, Michael Afton. Somewhere around the events of FNaF 3 a Sister Location, Michael becomes the manager of a new Freddy Fazbear’s restaurant.

This restaurant is run by a mysterious character – Cassette Man. Under his guidance, Michael has to salvage one out of the four animatronics in the alleyway. The main animatronics found in this game are Springtrap (the father of Michael) and Circus Baby (the sister of Michael).

There are multiple ways to end the game, depending on how well the player will manage the pizzeria. Also, how many animatronics are saved will influence the outcome of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza Simulator. One of the endings reveals Cassette Man’s identity – Henry Emily. Henry is William’s former business partner and the father of one of the previous phantoms (Charlotte).

Ultimate Custom Night

Originally intended as a post-launch add-on to the previous sequel, Ultimate Custom Night turned into an independent 7th version of the game. There is 50 animatronics from the previous versions of the game. The customizable night allows players to determine the animatronics’ aggressiveness during the week.

One opinion of the game takes place in a distorted version of Hell, where spirits are constantly torturing William. The creators of FNAF implied that hell mode is a dream and a nightmare that Afton is experiencing on repeat.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted

This game was released in 2019 on the 28th of May. The revolution here is that it was available only as a virtual reality game. The non-V.R editions were released later in 2019, but the fans welcomed the first approach of virtual reality content.

In this edition of the game, you are a technician who repairs a pizzeria’s animatronics. Solving puzzles and navigating your character through dark hallways is the main piece of content in Help Wanted. The goal is to avoid malfunctioning and hostile animatronics while completing various challenges.

A DLC pack is available for purchase with animatronic characters from previous games. You can also download Curse of Fredbear and a Halloween-themed pack for Help Wanted. This feature allows you to play ten new minigames.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach

The final version of the game was released in 2021. The plot revolves around a boy named Gregory, who is trapped in a shopping mall chased by killer animatronics. They attempt to hunt him down following the orders of Vanny – a mysterious woman dressed in a rabbit costume. The animatronics often get caught due to Vanessa’s security.

Also, Freddy receives a malfunction that allows him to avoid Vanny‘s hacking, which he will use to assist Gregory in an escape plan. This edition of the game did a terrific job continuing the franchise’s legacy. Moreover, the fans loved the twist that allowed Freddy to be on the positive side for once. The game received around 90% positive votes, as the fans said that there were lots of “narrative surprises.”

Five Nights at Freddy’s Spin-Offs

Friday Nights at Freddy’s has achieved huge success from all the editions that it was only suitable to have spinoff games available. A spinoff is when a game takes the characters, story elements, or gameplay mechanics from an existing series and takes them in a separate direction. Sometimes, the genre could be changed along the way, depending on the game developer’s creativity. Five Nights at Freddy’s has 4 official spinoff games that we will discuss below.

Five Nights at Freddy’s World (2016)

This spinoff was released at the beginning of 2016. Unlike the previous games, where the fans were amazed by everything the game had to offer, this case was different. Most of the players and the fans found the game incomplete and unstable. They expressed their frustrations by saying that the game was missing key features compared to the original games.

Cawthon acknowledged these mistakes from his side, as he mentioned that his eagerness led to this scenario. Steam first removed the game, and then Cawthon asked Valve to refund all the buyers. In 2016, the game was uploaded on Jolt and was free to download

There are two modes to play the game – Adventure and Fixed party. Also, you can choose between 2 difficulty modes – Normal and Hard. The goal is to explore the game by accessing new areas. Once you reveal a new region, you can press a specific button inside them and teleport between them. Several boss battles are available with various random encounters. The map is inhabited by enemies and different characters from the FNaF series.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Special Delivery (2019)

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Special Delivery is the second spinoff game of the original series. You control a flashlight and shocker intending to defeat animatronics within your home. In addition, after beating them, you’ll unlock their skin and add them to your animatronic arsenal.

Outside of the main plot, the player can salvage animatronics for parts and send them to another person’s home.

The Augmented Reality approach to the game, similar to Pokémon Go, made Five Nights at Freddy’s: Special Delivery more enjoyable and up-to-date. The continuous updates for new animatronics, parts, skins, and features made this game enjoyable and exciting.

Freddy in Space 2 (2019)

Freddy in Space 2 is a sequel to the FNaF 5: Freddy in Space minigame. It’s a platform shooter game, released for free on Jolt on the 3rd of December. This game has a humanitarian background, promoting the “CancelCancer” charity Livestream on YouTube.

Freddy leaves the lunar base on a deep-space mission. But, in doing so, the central computer system is hijacked. This hijack was performed by a high-tech computer assistant known as L.O.L.Z.H.A.X. Also, it has brainwashed the other resident space warriors, Bonnie, Foxy, and Chica, leaving Freddy’s son outside the station with limited air remaining. Freddy’s mission is first to save his friends and son, then defeat LolzHax.

Security Breach: Fury’s Rage (2021)

The last spinoff game was released on the 28th of April on Jolt. Its main goal was to compensate for the delayed launch of the Security Breach for the second time. Security Breach and Fury’s Rage have the same characters that are portrayed in a side-scrolling “beat-em-up” genre.

Friday Nights at Freddy’s Minigames

We have discussed the appearance of minigames in all versions of the game. However, we have not explained what the minigames mean. They are rare, random events that occur when the player dies. There are multiple minigames, such as SAVE THEM, where the player controls Freddy Bear. Other minigames include: Give Gifts, Give Life, Take Care to the Children, and more.

SAVE THEM

You control Withered Freddy in this minigame by using the movement buttons on your keyboard W, A, S, and D. The main goal is to follow the puppet, and once you arrive at a certain room with your companion, the game cuts to static and ends.

There is also a choice for the player to not follow the Puppet and receive an identical ending, with the difference that you will encounter Golden Freddy. If the player touches any of the five dead bodies strewn around the map, the result will be the same. While Freddy wanders around the map, the player can hear the letters being called out, spelling “S-A-V-E-T-H-E-M”.

On a rare occasion, William Afton can appear at the end of the room where Freddy will enter. Afton will follow Withered Freddy until he establishes contact with him. Then, the red static will be switched to blue, with the words “you can’t” flashing at the bottom corner of the screen.

After this scenario, the game shuts down. Afton can appear in various places, such as one of the party rooms, the main hall, or the room before the main stage. Running away from Afton won’t bring you any positive results, as the player is pushed away to make an entrance to another room.

Give Gifts, Give Life

The main character in this minigame is the Puppet. Giving gifts is completed by approaching four small figures that resemble dead children. Once you give away all the gifts the game state will change. The difference will be on the top of the screen, from “Give Gifts” to “Give Life”. Then, the Puppet will have to approach the dead bodies again. This will result in the four original animatronics masks making an appearance on the heads of the children.

Multiple letters are called out in this sequence of events, spelling “H-E-L-P-T-H-E-M”. If you complete the minigame, the jump scare will trigger Golden Freddy. Unlike the other minigames, Give Gifts, Give Life has a score. One hundred points are awarded for each successful gift.

Take Care of the Children

Again, the main protagonist in this minigame is Freddy. Freddy has a goal of taking a cake to six kids. If they receive their fair share of the cake, they’ll be ecstatic, and you’ll be closer to winning. On the other hand, neglecting them for too long causes them to turn red, expressing their impatience.

Meanwhile, there will be a child that will stand outside crying. As Freddy tries to serve cake to all six kids, a purple car arrives outside, and William Afton gets out of the car. He kills the sad child, who starts crying even harder when the murder occurs.

After the murder, the sad child will turn gray. The letters are called out during this time, spelling “S-A-V-E-H-I-M”, where Freddy will start to move slower and slower. If the player can turn the children green simultaneously, he will be unable to move and be forced to watch the children turn red. At the end of the minigame, William Afton drives away, and the jump scare by the Puppet is triggered.

Final Thoughts About Minigames

All these minigames have their plot, and regardless of finishing them successfully or not, they will end with the player getting jump scared. In FNaF3, access to the minigame is available by going to C.A.M. 3. After double-clicking on the character drawing of the Puppet on the wall, the game will launch. The minigames often tell a story about the lore of Friday Nights at Freddy’s.

The completion of the minigames can also influence the ending of the main game. For example, completing all the minigames in FNaF3 will grant the “good” ending where the souls of the haunted children are being released.
