Best FNAF Fanfiction List

Latest posts by Fredrick Ochami (see all)

Five Nights at Freddy’s is so rich in lore that it has inspired fans to create plenty of fanfiction. However, before we delve into the best FNAF fanfiction, let’s understand the franchise more.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is a horror franchise that started with simple games with plenty of jump scares and tense moments. The tension was especially palpable as you knew that the homicidal animatronics were getting closer whenever you did not see them in your camera.

After starting the franchise with FNAF 2, I discovered a whole world of lore hidden beneath the surface of the games. FNAF is a profoundly immersive franchise with the kind of lore that rivals any Souls-like game. So, with a world this rich in content, it should come as no surprise that there is plenty of fanfiction for it. But unfortunately, as with fanfiction for popular IPs, most fanfiction is mediocre.

I have scoured several fanfiction websites to find the best FNAF fanfiction. These are the stories that Scott Cawthon himself—the man who created this spooky franchise—would approve of.

Bottom Line Up Front

Even among the best FNAF fanfiction, one clearly stands out: “The Discovery and the Hunt” by Dalek_Kolt. This is a tense, creepy story that doesn’t outstay its welcome.

My Top Picks at a Glance

Game Over

  1. The Discovery and the Hunt” by Dalek_Kolt. This Reddit award-winning story has everything you could want in a horror FNAF fanfiction, and it’s bite-sized.
  2. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Our Little Horror Story” by Tenebrae Vesper. This story focuses on a security guard who spends the full five nights but decides to keep coming.
  3. Poor Little Souls” by Shadowfang14. Here, the animatronics have been possessed by the souls of different kids, which changes their actions and motivations.
  4. Reunion” by drownedinoxygen. David’s father, a security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, vanished when he was a child. Now, in his forties, he decides to investigate the disappearance.
  5. Five Nights, One Foxy” by RangerLauren. This is a story of a nightguard who unearths increasing twists as she works at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.
  6. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Game Over” by Tenebrae Vesper. This story asks a straightforward question: what if the main character also has supernatural powers?
  7. Something Always Remains” by Nightmare1. What if a night guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza becomes an amateur sleuth, determined to solve the mystery of the murderous animatronics? That’s what this story tries to answer.

Selection Criteria

How did I choose the best FNAF fanfiction?

Well, there are a couple of things I took into consideration.

Faithfulness

The first and most essential aspect of fanfiction is its faithfulness to the FNAF world. Is it a story that could take place in that world, or is it too farfetched?

Grammar

Yes, no one can or should expect fanfiction to have the kind of grammar you would find in a professionally edited story. However, there should not be so many errors that they detract from the story the writer is trying to tell.

Horror

FNAF is a horror franchise that does an exemplary job of scaring gamers’ pants off. So, a story based on this world should also be as scary and horrific as possible.

Fanfiction List

Below are the stories I personally consider the best FNAF fanfiction.

“The Discovery and the Hunt” by Dalek_Kolt

fnaf3 Discovery and the Hunt

  • Publishing Date: 4th May 2015
  • Word Count: 1,302 words
  • Where To Read It: Reddit

“The Discovery and the Hunt” is a short story that revolves around Springtrap, the main villain in FNAF 3. Springtrap actually used to be Michael Afton. He learned that the animatronics had souls trapped in them, and he tried to destroy them. However, the souls were set free, and they cornered him. To save himself, Michael entered the Spring Bonnie suit.

The suit malfunctioned, though, and it killed Michael. In “The Discovery and the Hunt,” Michael wakes up as Springtrap, with the memories of his death still fresh in his mind—and the pain still lingering. He is now at Fazbear’s Fright, and he starts by doing what he was programmed to.

However, things soon take a dark turn… The story is relatively short, so I will not reveal any more. That said, “The Discovery and the Hunt” is a brilliant piece of fanfiction. It is brief, to the point, and immerses us into Springtrap’s psyche. It is also creepy as heck.

The story also won a short story award on Reddit, which should give you an idea of how good the wordsmithing is.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s: Our Little Horror Story” by Tenebrae Vesper

Our Little Horror Story

  • Publishing Date: 27th June 2016
  • Word Count: 287,783 words
  • Where To Read It: FanFiction

“Five Nights at Freddy’s: Our Little Horror Story” is a curious one. It starts out as a typical FNAF game: a security guard spends the night at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The guard, Skylar Winchester, is on her 5th night. The animatronics are getting closer, her battery is low, and she hasn’t heard from the Phone Guy.

At 5:50 am, Freddy finds her. Surprisingly, though, he doesn’t kill her. Instead, he spares her life and warns her not to return. Curious and determined, Skylar chooses to return for the 6th night.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Our Little Horror Story” is a horror story with heart. Skylar delves into the animatronics’ dark pasts and tries to help them find a resolution. This makes them more relatable, and we come to see them as more than just killing machines. In this fanfiction, the animatronics are not haunted.

The word count is what you would expect from a George RR Martin book: “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Our Little Horror Story” is not a light read. However, it manages to be interesting for most of its duration. And the ending makes the hundreds of thousands of words you have read all worth it. The story is also famous among FNAF fans, with plenty of positive responses from readers.

“Poor Little Souls” by Shadowfang14

Poor Little Souls

  • Publishing Date: 27th June 2016
  • Word Count: 58,972 words
  • Where To Read It: FanFiction

Mike Schmidt is not the most gifted when it comes to studying. In fact, he has just been dismissed from college because his grades are below their standards. He applies for a job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza to keep himself busy. Mike decides to take on the night guard job in a five-day trial despite his parents’ disapproval and rumors of the pizzeria’s animatronics being homicidal.

Mike starts the job, and things begin to go wrong almost instantly. As you might expect, the animatronics start roaming as they hunt this new person. As usual, the Phone Guy calls, but Mike gets an unlikely ally during the night: Foxy.

Here is where “Poor Little Souls” becomes its own tale. We learn that Foxy and the other animatronics are possessed, like in the games. However, the souls inside them are different persons with different motivations. This causes some interesting deviations from the game’s lore, and we see some of the animatronics in new ways.

At nearly 60,000 words, “Poor Little Souls” is a novel-length fanfiction. The author, Shadowfang14, took over two years to write it: from 3rd April 2015 to 26th July 2017. The result is a creepy piece of fanfiction that rarely feels too long or like the author stuffed it with meaningless content.

If you follow the story’s reviews, it also has a good reputation on the FanFiction website.

“Reunion” by drownedinoxygen

Reunion

  • Publishing Date: 9th April 2015
  • Word Count: 2,605 words
  • Where To Read It: DeviantArt

When David was young, his father used to work at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza as a security guard. Even though the restaurant had several disappearances, his father did not stop working there. When the restaurant eventually closed and the dad lost his job, he was often absent from home. And one day, he never came back.

Decades later, when David is in his 40s, his curiosity about his father’s disappearance reignites. So he starts to investigate the disappearance and eventually stumbles on a truth that he’s not ready for. DeviantArt user drownedinoxygen’s story is brisk, twisted, and immersive. It is among the best FNAF fanfiction you can read on a 5-minute break.

“Five Nights, One Foxy” by RangerLauren

Foxy

  • Publishing Date: 23rd November 2014
  • Word Count: 66,981 words
  • Where To Read It: FanFiction

This is a back-to-basics piece of FNAF fanfiction. It focuses on teenager Natalie Retter, who gets a job as a night guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. She starts the job, and naturally, things go wrong from the first night. However, each day she spends at the restaurant offers increasing challenges and plenty of twists.

The story goes its own way, with the characters and animatronics acting in ways you might not expect. That said, not every twist lands or is unpredictable. But that is a risk when you try to deviate from what many other fanfiction authors are writing and be a bit original.

However, “Five Nights, One Foxy” is a solid piece of entertainment and among the best FNAF fanfiction. If you like the other stories on this list, you might also enjoy this one.

“Five Nights at Freddy’s: Game Over” by Tenebrae Vesper

fnaf

  • Publishing Date: 28th September 2015
  • Word Count: 257,479 words
  • Where To Read It: FanFiction

This is the second story here by FanFiction author Tenebrae Vesper. However, it is still a darned good piece of storytelling. We know that animatronics are supernatural entities. However, what if the main character also has paranormal abilities?

We get this with “Five Nights at Freddy’s: Game Over.” The main character, Kyra Ravenhearst, is an 18-year-old horror fan who gets messages from the spirit world. And Springtrap is the major animatronic.

Instead of a straightforward plot, Tenebrae has intentionally made the story a challenge to follow. Flashbacks, visions, time skips, and music lyrics from the games are scattered everywhere. Considering the story’s length—over 250,000 words—it sounds like a formidable read.

However, the story becomes more digestible once you read a few chapters. And it is a bloody good time, too. The characters are multifaceted and morally gray. The animatronics are murderous and gloomy because they are spirits of dead kids.

The story occurs after the chief events of FNAF 3, so it is a fun tale to read after you finish that game. It might not be canon. However, it is a good time.

“Something Always Remains” by Nightmare1

fnaf

  • Publishing Date: 6th March 2019
  • Word Count: 235,712 words
  • Where To Read It: FanFiction

Mike Schmidt has just lost his dull office job. Then, he sees an ad from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza calling for a nightguard. Even though he knows about the missing children and the rumors surrounding the place, he takes the job.

His motivation isn’t a quick paycheck, though. Instead, he wants to unearth the mystery of the pizzeria before it shuts down.

Mike starts his job, and despite unwanted attention from the murderous animatronics, he sets out to solve the pizzeria’s mystery. But unfortunately, he soon learns that the killer animatronics are actually haunted, that the janitor has something to hide and that his best friend is involved in this mess.

The question is: will he survive long enough to solve the mystery of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza?

Something Always Remains” is a horror fanfiction that ticks all the right boxes. It has a central mystery that keeps unraveling, a relatable main character, torture, and oodles of foreshadowing. This is among the few pieces of fanfiction that become richer when you read them twice.
