The story of Cupcake and the other animatronic characters begins in the 1980s, when Fazbear Entertainment’s first business success, Fredbear’s Family Diner, was in full swing. The restaurant was mesmerizing families left and right due to its innovative main attractions.

As we are all well familiar with, these were Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, the animatronic inventions of William Afton and Henry Emily, and the first spring lock suits ever made in the series.

Children flocked to the cute animatronics who put on dazzling performances, being operated by the restaurant’s staff themselves. On the other hand, parents could relax and help themselves to some pizza while their children preoccupied themselves with the diner’s animatronics – it was perfect.

Hence, Fredbear’s Family Diner quickly became very popular amongst families and settled as everyone’s go-to place for birthday parties.

With the success of Fredbear’s Family Diner, Fazbear Entertainment did what any business would naturally do – expand. And so, they opened up a sister restaurant known as Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, where William and Henry introduced a new group of animatronic stars: Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy.

At this point, Cupcake first introduces himself as Chica’s companion, resting on the platter she is always seen carrying around.

As his name implies, Cupcake is a small cupcake-like animatronic of the most generic nature, resembling your typical pink-frosted cupcake. However, what makes him different from your regular cupcake is his two yellow eyes slotted into black eyelids just above his buck teeth that peer out of the frosting’s base.

The rest of his details follow as expected, with a vinyl lit-up candle poking out of the top of his head and a wrapper-less, naked dough base below.

Cupcake’s Appearances in the FNAF Series

In most FNAF games, Cupcake appears as an easter egg, being on display for long-time fans to cherish; such games include Five Nights at Freddy’s 1, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, and even Ultimate Custom Night.

However, he has a more critical role in Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 as an enemy capable of jumpscaring you. Lastly, Cupcake also makes a unique appearance in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted by having a jumpscare event amongst other roles, whose details we will explore shortly.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 1:

Five Nights at Freddy’s 1 occurs just before closing the third and final iteration of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, long after William Afton’s first death. The game stars Micheal Afton with his newest alias, Mike Schmidt, who is practically a zombie at this point due to his fusion and splitting from Ennard. Regardless, Micheal’s objective is to free the vengeful children (victims of William Afton) from the animatronics that they haunt.

In Five Nights at Freddy’s 1, Cupcake is present in the main office room where all seven nights take place. Every time you load into a night, you can see him sitting on one of the monitors to the fan’s right, staring directly at you.

Apart from the office, you can also spot Chica holding Cupcake on her platter when she is stationary in the Show Stage area (CAM 1A). Fortunately, Cupcake is only a stationary object in this game and won’t jumpscare you at any point.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2:

Cupcake can be seen in the opening cutscene to FNAF 2.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 takes place in the new Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, which was later re-opened by Henry after cutting off ties with William in an attempt to redeem the company. It should not be confused with the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria, where William Afton committed his first murders in the infamous Missing Children Incident.

In Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, you can spot Cupcake being held on Chica’s platter whenever the lights flicker on in Party Room 1 (CAM 01), given that she has moved there. Furthermore, you can also find Cupcake sitting on Chica’s platter when she appears across the hallway with her arms stretched out if you flash your flashlight on her.

Last but not least, you’ll also see Cupcake positioned on the table in front of you along with the other FNAF plushies across all seven nights.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3:

Spotting a Shadow Cupcake on CAM 06. Don't forget to click it!

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 takes place in Fazbear’s Fright, a horror attraction based on the grim rumors that brought down its predecessor, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. This is where Springtrap (a.k.a William Afton) makes his reincarnated appearance and aims to settle the score with his son, Micheal Afton.

In Five Nights at Freddy’s 3, Cupcake will often appear in your field of vision as a hallucination; as he will only be a hallucination, he won’t cause you any harm. Other than that, there is a solid reference to Cupcake in this game through the “Chica’s Party” minigame. In the “Chica’s Party” minigame, you take control of Toy Chica and are tasked with collecting four cupcakes, handing them out to four crying children to cheer them up.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4:

Upon slipping into the bedroom, Nightmare Cupcake will jumpscare you when you next look away from the bed!

Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 is the prequel to all other games on the FNAF timeline, taking place just before the Bite of ’83. After losing his daughter to Circus Baby, William swore to never let his children near the animatronics again – the only complication was that his younger son Evan was very fond of them.

Therefore, in order to protect Evan, William showed him controlled nightmares of the animatronics he so loved, the entire experiences of which are encapsulated in the game.

Cupcake has never had a more critical role in any game than in Five Nights at Freddy’s 4, where he can jumpscare you, resulting in a direct game over. The jumpscare occurs if you fail to keep the right hallway in check  – but it is important to distinguish between Nightmare Chica’s jumpscare and Nightmare Cupcake’s jumpscare.

Nightmare Chica will jumpscare you if she advances to the right door of the bedroom from the hallway and you, on the door, do not close it – there will be a time window to close the door, though, indicated by her breathing sound effect.

On the other hand, if she is successful in her advancement to the right door and you do not close it while not being at the door, Nightmare Cupcake will instead slip into the bedroom and jumpscare you whenever you turn away from the bed and the Nightmare Freddies.

Hence, you essentially need to keep a check on Nightmare Chica across all seven nights to avoid both jumpscares, which will become increasingly more challenging due to her AI upscaling.

Ultimate Custom Night

Similar to the first three installments of the Five Nights at Freddy’s games, Cupcake makes his appearance in Ultimate Custom Night as an immovable, throwback object. What’s particularly nostalgic is that you spot him in the Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza office on top of the right monitor – this is a direct throwback to the FNAF 1 office.

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted

There are hilarious clips on the internet of players getting genuinely startled by this jumpscare!

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted, as we all know, is a reboot of the first three FNAF games in Virtual Reality, along with several other minigames. With that said, you may quickly expect Cupcake to be present on his usual spot on top of the right monitor in the rebooted FNAF 1 map, which you are absolutely right!

Later in the game, after you beat the first three FNAF games along with the proceeding Dark Rooms minigames, next up will be Parts and Services, where you are required to fix Bonnie, Chica, Freddy, and Foxy. Furthermore, at Chica’s level, you spot Cupcake for the one and only time in the minigame, and he plays a role in the maintenance process.

More specifically, when you apply the second dose of chemi-spray on her to rid her of the cockroach infestation, Cupcake will grab the opportunity to escape Chica’s platter. Consequently, if he is not returned to Chica’s platter in time or is mishandled (dropped or knocked off), Chica will get angry and jumpscare you – so handle Cupcake with utmost care!

Lastly, an exciting Cupcake jumpscare has also been integrated into the game, and while it doesn’t make much sense, you should still be aware of it. When you fail at any game and return to the Death Room, where you either return to the main menu or restart the level, you will see Cupcake seated on top of the TV.

However, if Blacklight Mode is active, Cupcake will instead be spotted to the left of the TV, glitching into its nightmare counterpart occasionally; should you choose to interact with him, he will jumpscare you before disappearing off-screen. Why did Scott Cawthon design this? We have no idea.

Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery

Cupcake also makes his appearance yet again in the ninth installment of the FNAF series, found in his usual spot on Chica’s platter. Additionally, with each different skin of Chica in the game, there is a brand new makeover for Cupcake. While regular Chica and Toy Chica are naturally present, the duo has some unique skins.

For instance, there is Liberty Chica, where Chica is seen posing as the Statue of Liberty (with Cupcake taking the torch’s spot), and Scorching Chica, where Cupcake assumes a very charred texture to match the theme. On the other hand, the Little Red Chica skin references Little Red Riding Hood with Cupcake housed in her basket instead, while an 8-bit depiction of Cupcake is seen with the Highscore Toy Chica skin. Some other skins are:

  • Catrina Toy Chica and Calavera Cupcake
  • Game-over Toy Chica and 8-bit Cupcake

Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach

Cupcake has a well-deserved cameo in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach as an entire shop of the Freddy Fazbear’s Mega Pizzaplex is dedicated to him, design-wise. The shop is labeled with a large text quoting “Let’s Eat!” and is found on level 2, towards the upper section of the right-wing. In addition, the shop decorates itself with Cupcakes of all shapes, small and big.

Cupcake’s Counterparts

Toy Cupcake

As we all know, Toy Cupcake comes with the Toy Chica counterpart. Appearance-wise, Toy Cupcake does have some striking differences from its original variant. For instance, it is more colorful and vibrant overall, replacing its yellow tinge with blue hues, evident from his blue eyes and blue-striped candle design. In addition, another interesting detail to note is that Toy Cupcake astonishingly lacks the iconic buck teeth of his predecessor.

Regardless, knowing that Toy Cupcake accompanies Toy Chica, we can easily infer that he must appear in FNAF 2, Ultimate Custom Night, FNAF: Help Wanted, FNAF: Security Breach, and FNAF AR: Special Delivery. Furthermore, as we all know, in all but one of these five games, does Toy Cupcake play a substantial role other than being part of Chica’s prop.

Shadow Cupcake

Shadow Cupcake makes its one and only appearance in FNAF 3 and serves a more prop-less role as the gateway to the “Chica’s Party” minigame. In a nutshell, on night 3, you will see Shadow Cupcakes appear on certain cameras, and should you choose to click on all of them, you will automatically be taken to the “Chica’s Party” minigame.

More particularly, you will find these Shadow Cupcakes on CAM 02, CAM 03, CAM 04, and CAM 06. Lastly, be wary of phantoms while trying to find Shadow Cupcakes, for Nightmare Mangle likes to lurk around CAM 04, and Nightmare Balloon Boy can spawn practically on any of the five cameras.

Golden Cupcake

Golden Cupcake is arguably the most insignificant out of all the other Cupcake counterparts due to having the least amount of screen time and effect on you as the player. Appearance-wise, Golden Cupcake bears a lot of resemblance to the original Cupcake, except that his frosting is yellow instead of pink.

Golden Cupcake appears in FNAF 3 where he occasionally replaces the drawing of Toy Bonnie on CAM 04 from time to time – it is unclear, though, what exactly causes such a thing to happen and why Toy Bonnie specifically.

Nightmare Cupcake

Nightmare Cupcake is Cupcake’s most frightening counterpart as it has the potential to directly jumpscare you in some of the FNAF games, particularly FNAF 4. Moreover, in FNAF 4, Nightmare Cupcake serves as Nightmare Chica’s henchmen from night 2 onwards, jumpscaring you should you fail to keep the right door of the right hallway under check.

In order to avoid this, you must stay vigilant of the sounds at the right door and keep track of Chica’s advancements. Nightmare Chica will make two distinct sounds before advancing to the right door, upon either which you should check up on the door. If you hear a breathing sound, close the door immediately; else, flash your flashlight after 3-4 seconds of silence to fend off any further advancements.

Nightmare Cupcake also makes his appearance in FNAF: Help Wanted; in the Parts and Services level, Chica and Cupcake are replaced by Neon Chica and Nightmare Cupcake if Blacklight mode is active. Other than that, as we mentioned before, Cupcake is also seen glitching into Nightmare Cupcake in the Death Room if Blacklight mode is active – do not interact with him, though, for he will jumpscare you.

Funtime Cupcake

Funtime Cupcake, similar to Toy Cupcake, comes with the Funtime counterpart of Chica, appearing in Ultimate Custom Night and Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator. Appearance-wise, while Funtime Cupcake does retain his pink frosting, his eyes are colored blue, and his candle is redone with purple stripes.

Lastly, Funtime Cupcake’s most unique physical trait is his teeth, which are long and sharp, coming off as more menacing in comparison to his original buck teeth.

FAQs

Question: Is Cupcake Possessed?

Answer: Cupcake’s possession is heavily debated in the FNAF community. We believe that there is solid evidence to show that he is possessed, possibly by Susie’s dog. Cupcake’s autonomous behavior in the FNAF: Help Wanted Parts and Services minigame and the fact that his eyes are lit up in Chica’s Halloween counterpart make for a solid argument.

Question: Does Cupcake have an Endoskeleton?

Answer: Cupcake is one of the smallest, if not the smallest, animatronic across the FNAF series. His size and stature are strikingly different from mainstream animatronics like Bonnie and Chica, which leads us to believe that he must lack a proper Endoskeleton.

Question: Is Cupcake in FNAF: Sister Location?

Answer: Cupcake does not appear in its physical form at any point in FNAF: Sister Location. However, an interesting detail to note is that in one of the Custom Night modes, there is a challenge known as the “Cupcake Challenge,” which we believe is most certainly named after the cute animatronic.

FNAF Cupcake: Conclusion

Cupcake is one the most harmless of all the animatronics in the FNAF universe, appearing only as an easter egg in most games. However, you should be wary of his Nightmare counterpart, who has been more than just a prop in every FNAF game he has been featured in. With that said, it is safe to say that we should expect a jumpscare or two from Nightmare Cupcake, should he be included in any future FNAF game.
