FNAF Freddy Fazbear Guide

Latest posts by Fredrick Ochami (see all)

It’s interesting how characters called Freddy often become the most iconic horror characters. We have A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Kruger, Scooby Doo’s Fred Jones, and the latest entry: Five Nights at Freddy’s Freddy Fazbear.

So, when I first heard of FNAF, I wasn’t surprised to learn that a game with my namesake character (yes, I’m also a Fred) was in the horror genre. Then I played FNAF, and I’ve been hooked since.

So, what’s the big deal about Freddy Fazbear?

  • He’s the mascot of most Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzerias, along with his counterparts
  • He has a profound lore
  • He’s the most recognizable FNAF character

Freddy Fazbear is not the kind of bear you cuddle. Despite his welcoming look, Freddy is a character to avoid at all costs. However, before we get into that, here’s the bottom line if you’re pressed for time.

Bottom Line Up Front

Freddy Fazbear is the most iconic FNAF character. He has the most animatronic counterparts and is central to the franchise lore.

Freddy Fazbear’s Appearance

In his original form, Freddy resembles an ordinary animatronic who entertains kids. He has blue eyes and a wide grin with large, square teeth.

His fur is brown, with a lighter shade on his muzzle and stomach. His muzzle has three freckles on each side, his nose and thick eyebrows are black, and his feet have three toes. Freddy also wears a black top hat and a matching bowtie and carries a microphone in his right hand.

Freddy has broken down significantly in his withered form–which appears in FNAF 2. His arms have visible stitching and received so much damage that you can see the endoskeleton in places. In addition, his knees have received damage, he has an upper set of teeth, and he has two black buttons under his bowtie.

To learn about his counterparts–which range from cute to terrifying–scroll down to the Counterparts section.

Freddy Fazbear’s Personality

During the day, when he’s working at the Pizzeria, Freddy follows his programming. He has fun, sings, and is a fantastic entertainer for kids and families.

However, Freddy’s personality changes at night, and he becomes a sinister killer. He hunts down the security guards in the restaurant and kills them if they are not careful.

Why does his personality change, and why does he have a vendetta against night security guards? Don’t worry. It will all make sense in the next section.

Freddy Fazbear’s Lore

Freddy Fazbear’s story starts with William Afton. William co-founded Fazbear Entertainment with Henry Emily. Their first restaurant had Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, and the animatronics were so successful they made the pair wealthy.

William and Henry opened a second restaurant, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. The pizzeria had more mascots, including Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy.

However, one night during a birthday party at the pizzeria, William donned a Spring Bonnie suit and lured five celebrating children to the pizzeria’s back room. He killed them and hid their bodies inside the pizzeria’s animatronics.

William’s strategy worked because no one found the children’s bodies, and they were eventually presumed dead. He was the main suspect, but the law couldn’t prosecute him without evidence. However, customers who came to Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza started complaining of foul odors from the animatronics, which also oozed mucus and blood from the eyes and mouths.

The customers likened the smells to reanimated carcasses, though no one investigated them. This incident attracted the attention of the health department, which threatened the pizzeria with a shutdown.

Management also disabled the animatronics from roaming the pizzeria during the day, limiting them to only moving at night. Now haunted, the animatronics became hostile toward the night security guards–probably mistaking them for William Afton.

The Missing Children incident backlash led to the pizzeria closing down. William never expected that the children’s souls wouldn’t move on. Instead, the souls latched onto the animatronic suits he’d stuffed them into. Freddy Fazbear contained the soul of a child called Gabriel.

After the incident, Fazbear Entertainment co-founder Henry cut ties with William. He moved Freddy and the other animatronics from Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza into the Parts and Services section of the new Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. However, Henry didn’t use them. Instead, he replaced them with Toy Animatronics.

William snuck into the restaurant and destroyed Freddy and his fellow animatronics, hoping to free the souls from their eternal cages. However, the plan backfired when the vengeful souls of Gabriel and the other children didn’t move on. Instead, they pursued William.

The child murderer fled and hid inside the Spring Bonnie suit in a hidden room, hoping to scare them away. However, condensation dripped from the ceiling and into the Spring Bonnie suit.

The spring lock suit malfunctioned and sprang into its default position, its parts piercing through William. He collapsed, blood pooling around him. After having their revenge on the man who killed them, the spirits left.

Henry Emily found William. Instead of helping, Henry left his old colleague to his fate and built a wall that sealed off the room. However, because of the damage William had done to the animatronics, they couldn’t work anymore. He soon shut down the pizzeria with no plans of opening another one.

Appearances

Five Nights at Freddy’s

freddy fazbear

Freddy Fazbear is active in FNAF 1 and is one of the animatronics you have to face. Unless your power runs out prematurely, Freddy doesn’t start moving until Night 3. When he does, the animatronic moves in the shadows, eluding your view–which I found unnerving because I kept jumping at shadows.

When Freddy is active, he will pass through the dining area, restrooms, kitchen, and East Hall corner. Please pay close attention to the monitors and watch out for his glowing eyes in the shadows. Freddy will slow down when you watch him on the monitors. Then, when he’s close, he will play creepy music from his music box before giving you a jump scare.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

fnaf 2 freddy fazbear

In FNAF 2, you have a Freddy Fazbear head you can wear as a mask. When the other animatronics enter the Office as you wear Freddy’s head, they will think you’re one of them and leave you alone. However, Foxy will see through your disguise and attack.

In this game, you face Freddy in his withered form. He remains dormant during Night 1 in the Parts and Service room. However, he starts moving on Night 2 and increases his activity on Night 3. He will move past the hall outside the restroom and the party room–where he creepily stares at you through the camera. Finally, he will enter the Main Hall, and wearing the Freddy mask is the only way to keep him from attacking.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 3

phantom freddy fnaf 3

In FNAF 3, Freddy Fazbear only appears in the main game as an empty suit. However, he has a more substantial role in the End-of-Night minigames.

To unlock the minigame with Freddy, complete Night 1 in the main game. The game will take you to a screen with retro graphics. The setting is the Show Stage, where you play as Freddy. Leave the room. No matter where you go, you will encounter Shadow Freddy. He will ask you to follow him.

You will eventually reach a room that will push you back. Next, William Afton appears (as Purple Guy) and tears Freddy apart. Then the minigame ends.

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Simulator

pizzeria simulator freddy

In Pizzeria Simulator, you control Freddy Fazbear during the minigames. Your goal is to collect the available pizzas and hurl them at hungry customers. As the game progresses, another Freddy appears and blocks you. You need to give the customers pizza while dodging this Shadow Freddy. Eventually, the game glitches and multiple Shadow Freddy’s emerge.

Ultimate Custom Night

freddy fazbear ucn

Freddy Fazbear is among the numerous animatronics appearing in Ultimate Custom Night. He slowly approaches the Office from the left hall. When reaches the doorway, close the door to avoid a jump scare. Freddy also becomes increasingly active as the building gets warmer. To keep Freddy from becoming a significant hindrance, ensure the temperature doesn’t exceed 60 degrees.

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted

freddy fazbear fnaf vr

The FNAF VR game offers one of the most terrifying experiences in the franchise. I recommend playing the VR versions of the first two games to encounter Freddy. His movements are identical to FNAF 1 and 2, but the caveat is you can only play the first four nights in Normal Mode.

In addition, Freddy becomes active on Night 1. Searching for Freddy as he moves through the shadows in virtual reality is a pants-browning experience I didn’t know I needed until I experienced it.

Freddy is also one of the animatronics you can repair in the game. However, you must be careful if you want to avoid a jump scare. Start by removing the cap from Freddy’s mouth and putting it in the bin to your right. Next, grab the animatronic’s bowtie and pull it outward.

His chest cavity will open, exposing the internals. Finally, carefully remove the green watch from his side–don’t touch any other internal–and put it in the lost-and-found bin.

You should then remove his music box before his safety latch lowers. Push the red button to reset his safety latch, remove the red shoe, and put it in the bin. Return the music box, and press Freddy’s nose to remove

If you have a VR headset, I suggest playing Help Wanted. The game offers one of the scariest ways to encounter Freddy Fazbear.

Five Nights at Freddy’s AR: Special Delivery

Freddy Fazbear is frightening enough in VR. However, facing him in the real world through augmented reality brings a new dimension of terror.

Freddy is an animatronic you can unlock in Special Delivery. When he arrives, use your flashlight to find him. You will first see his glowing eyes before he vanishes. Then, he will reappear–you will see his eyes, then his body. Quickly shock him as he rushes towards you. He will disappear again and reappear as an endoskeleton. Shock him again to win.

The Silver Eyes

fnaf the silver eyes

In the first FNAF novel, Freddy’s origin story is identical to the video games. William Afton wears the Spring Bonnie suit and kills Gabriel and four other kids. He then stuffs their bodies into Freddy Fazbear and the other animatronics, and the pizzeria soon shuts down.

However, the novel diverges from the games when it follows Charlie, Henry Emily’s daughter. She sneaks into the closed-off restaurant with her friends and encounters Freddy Fazbear. With the vengeful Gabriel possessing him, Freddy and the other animatronics hunt the teenagers and corner them in the party room. However, Golden Freddy appears and deactivates the animatronics, saving the teens.

The Twisted Ones

William Afton abducts Charlie. Her friends seek help from Freddy and the other animatronics, which are deactivated in Clay Burke’s broiler room. The teens mention William Afton, and this spurs the animatronics to life. They pursue William and defeat the Twisted animatronics. Freddy also takes out an army of Balloon Boys and makes a path for the teens to pass safely. However, he vanishes when Charlie’s house collapses.

Fazbear Frights 8: Gumdrop Angel

fnaf fazbear frights

Freddy has a minor role in Gumdrop Angel. He appears at a party at a pizzeria, hyping up the audience. He helps the birthday girl blow out her candles and shows his charming, entertaining side.

Fazbear Frights 9: The Puppet Carver

fazbear frights 9 the puppet carver

In the short story “Pizza Kit,” Freddy appears in the main character Peyton’s Nightmare. He pulls out the body parts of her best friend Marley from a burlap bag and puts them into a sauce-filled cauldron.

Freddy Fazbear’s Counterparts

Since Freddy Fazbear is the titular character, he has many counterparts in the games.

Fredbear

fredbear

Fredbear is the original Freddy, and one of the first animatronics William Afton and Henry Emily made. He was the main mascot of Fredbear’s Family Diner.

Fredbear has a tiny purple top hat and bowtie, and he has rounder ears than Freddy Fazbear.

Even though Fredbear is crucial to FNAF lore, he rarely appears in the games. We only see him in minigames and easter eggs until Ultimate Custom Night. You can use the Death Coin to summon Fredbear or set Golden Freddy to one and every other animatronic to zero.

Fredbear is the reason the Bite of 83 happened. At his party, the Crying Child’s bullies forced his head into Fredbear’s mouth. The child’s tears caused a spring lock malfunction, leading to Fredbear’s mouth closing and crushing the Crying Child’s head.

Toy Freddy

Toy Freddy

He is the modified version of Withered Freddy. Henry Emily designed him to be more child-friendly than his original counterpart. Toy Freddy has red cheeks, a red strip on his top hat, two black buttons under his bowtie, and a glossy body.

Toy Freddy moves like Withered Freddy in FNAF 2. Once he’s in the Office Hall and approaching you, you must quickly wear the Freddy mask and hope he goes away.

Funtime Freddy

funtime freddy

He is a white bear with purple shades on his stomach, muzzle, cheeks, and knees. His five-fingered left hand holds a microphone, while he has a puppet in his right hand, Bon-Bon. A speaker lies under his bowtie. Funtime Freddy first appears in FNAF: Sister Location. Bon-Bon distracts you while Freddy bides his time before he attacks. He is one of the animatronics that gets scooped and becomes part of Ennard.

Funtime Freddy also appears in Help Wanted. ’s Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience He will split up with Bon-Bon and approach the Office from the right side while Bon-Bon comes from the left. Keep Freddy away by flashing your light if he’s in the hall or closing the door if he’s at the door.

Molten Freddy

molten freddy

After Ennard splits up, the remains become Molten Freddy. This is a blend of Funtime Freddy, Funtime Foxy, and Ballora. However, Funtime Freddy is in charge.

He faintly resembles Funtime Freddy, but the differences are significant. For instance, Molten Freddy is rusty and silver, losing most of his body covering. In addition, he has sharp teeth and a brown bowtie, and most of his exposed body comprises tangled cables and wires. Several wires also stick out of Molten Freddy’s shoulders.

Michael Afton salvages the animatronic in Pizzeria Simulator. After the salvage, Molten Freddy hunts Michael to reach the pizzeria’s children. However, Michael outsmarts him by luring Molten Freddy and the other animatronics deep into the pizzeria. Finally, Henry lights a fire in the building that burns Michael, Molten Freddy, and the other animatronics.

Nightmare Freddy

nightmare freddy

Nightmare Freddy is the scariest Freddy Fazbear counterpart I’ve encountered. If there’s one animatronic who should appear in the FNAF movie to make it the scariest movie of all time, it’s Nightmare Freddy.

The animatronic is extremely tattered, exposing wires and his endoskeleton. He still has the black top hat and bowtie, but wires poke out of the hat. Nightmare Freddy also has sharp metallic claws and razor-sharp teeth that can make quick work of any foe.

If one Nightmare Freddy wasn’t enough, the animatronic also has small nightmare Fredbears called Freddles. The Freddles hang around his body and look terrifying–the opposites of cute animatronics like Helpy.

Nightmare Freddy first appears in FNAF 4. His Freddles show up on the bed in your bedroom, and you must shine the flashlight on them to get rid of them. Meanwhile, Nightmare Freddy lurks under the bed. If you don’t check it often enough, he will attack you.

Helpy

helpy fnaf

Helpy is a miniature version of Funtime Freddy. However, he doesn’t have a speaker, an endoskeleton, face plates, or Bon-Bon. Instead, he has blue eyes, pink cheeks, and buckteeth. Helpy’s appearance makes him one of the cutest FNAF characters–and he won’t annoy you like Balloon Boy, my least-favorite FNAF character.

Helpy first appears in several minigames in Pizzeria Simulator. He also helps with paperwork if you get lawsuits while running the restaurant.

In Ultimate Custom Night, Helpy can attack you. When he appears in the Office, click on him quickly to avoid a jump scare. However, if you’re slow, he will blow an air horn as he jumpscares you.

Rockstar Freddy

rockstar freddy

Rockstar Freddy is the mascot of the new Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza in Pizzeria Simulator. He has pink cheeks, circular ears, a purple top hat and matching bowtie, a gold star under the bowtie, five fingers on each arm, pink knees, and four toes on each foot.

Rockstar Freddy doesn’t become a threat until Ultimate Custom Night. Here, he spends the whole night in the Office. He has a coin slot and occasionally activates to ask you to pay him in Faz-Coins. He will deactivate if you pay him. However, if you can’t pay, he will jumpscare you. If you don’t have the Faz-Coins to pay, turn up the heat in the Office. He will malfunction and assume you’ve paid.

Phantom Freddy

Phantom Freddy

Phantom Freddy first appears in FNAF 3. He is charred, has glowing white pupils, and has wires sticking out of his body.

You see Phantom Freddy when your character hallucinates. He passes the hallway window and appears in the Office–nothing you do will keep him out. Avoid looking at Phantom Freddy to avoid a jump scare. Instead, look at the maintenance panel or camera until he leaves.

Lefty

Lefty

Lefty is another Freddy counterpart who first appears in Pizzeria Simulator. He is black with gray shades on his muzzle, inner ears, toes, and stomach. He has red knees, a bowtie, and a matching top hat. Lefty has a gold star under his bowtie, is missing an eye, and holds a microphone with a gold handle. His counterpart, Righty, has the opposite look: white with blue shades.

After you salvage and activate Lefty, he hunts you at night by moving through the vents. Unfortunately, he has sharp ears, so you must maintain silence when he’s on the hunt.

Yenndo

yenndo

If you’ve wondered how Freddy Fazbear looks in his pure endoskeleton form, Yenndo is the answer. The animatronic has round ears like Funtime Freddy, whose endoskeleton is entirely exposed. However, instead of a top hat, Yenndo has an upside-down screw on his head.

Yenndo has a minor appearance in Sister Location. You can see him at the Funtime Auditorium instead of Funtime Foxy. However, Yenndo rarely appears, and only on Night 3.

Dreadbear

dreadbear

Dreadbear is the main villain in Help Wanted’s DLC, Curse of Dreadbear. He is tattered, with stitches on parts of his body. In addition, Dreadbear has glowing eyes, mismatched ears, sharp fingers, bolts sticking out of his head, and a stitched-up black top hat and matching bowtie.

You can bring Dreadbear to life in Spooky Mansion: Dreadbear by putting a brain inside his head. This is tricky work as he can jumpscare you if you’re not careful or if you shock him too often. Dreadbear also appears in “Danger! Keep Out!” on Night 3. He advances towards you, and you can only halt him using the flash. You can also hear Dreadbear’s stomping when he reaches the Pirate Cove.

Golden Freddy

golden freddy

Golden Freddy is among the most mysterious FNAF animatronics. He has a black top hat and matching bowtie, white pupils, and holds a microphone in his right hand. Golden Freddy first appears in FNAF 1. If you see his poster on the security camera, he can show up in the Office, make your screen glitch, and attack you.

A girl called Cassidy possesses Golden Freddy–yes, she is another William Afton victim.

Glamrock Freddy

glamrock freddy

Glamrock Freddy is among the Glamrock Animatronics that appear in FNAF: Security Breach. He has blue face paint, a blue-striped top hat, a black bowtie with a blue lightning mark below, and red shoulders, and he holds a microphone stand.

Unlike Freddy Fazbear’s other counterparts, Glamrock Freddy is one of two who help the player–the other one is Helpy. In Security Breach, he helps the player, Gregory, avoid the other animatronics and the security guard, Vanessa.

Skins

Shamrock Freddy

Freddy Fazbear has received a few skins to keep him exciting and give him exciting new looks. Unfortunately, despite Freddy’s popularity, he has among the fewest FNAF skins–only two.

His skins include:

  1. Shamrock Freddy: In this Special Delivery skin, Shamrock Freddy is clove-green, wears a leprechaun hat, and has a golden necklace.
  2. Firework Freddy: Firework Freddy is a 4th of July-inspired skin for Special Delivery. The animatronic wears an American flag-colored top hat and clothes. Instead of a microphone, he holds an enormous firecracker.

FAQs

Question: How Was Freddy Fazbear Made?

Answer: Freddy Fazbear is an animatronic that Fazbear Entertainment owners William Afton and Henry Emily made as the mascot of their new restaurant, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza.

Question: Who is Freddy Fazbear?

Answer: Freddy Fazbear is the mascot of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza and the leader of his band, which includes Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy. He is an animatronic bear who sings to kids during the day but walks around the pizzeria at night, hunting security guards.

Question: Who Possesses Freddy Fazbear?

Answer: One of Fazbear Entertainment’s owners, William Afton, killed a child called Gabriel and hid their body inside Freddy Fazbear. However, the child’s spirit fused with the endoskeleton, possessing Freddy. At night, Freddy wanders the pizzeria and attacks any human he sees, thinking it’s William.

FNAF Freddy Fazbear: Conclusion

Freddy Fazbear deserves to be the most recognizable animatronic in Five Nights at Freddy’s. Freddy is a character with plenty of lore, and I found him intimidating.

I recommend playing Help Wanted to face Freddy as he moves through the shadows, with only his glowing eyes visible. This experience is unforgettable in VR. However, if you don’t have a VR headset, I still recommend playing the first two FNAF games–at night if possible–to face this worthy foe.
